It follows through with bluegrassy "Here's To The Halcyon" and wraps up with "The One". The up-tempo "Dance With Me" is the highlight of the album and it's set up perfectly by opening track "The Fool. The only downside is that each new album by the Old 97's seems to make their previous albums even better. Blame It On Gravity is a solid effort from the Old 97's. The overall tempo of the album is slower than previous releases but the combination of country, rock, rockabilly and blues is still the quintessential Old 97's.
I would highly recommend this latest release from one of the best bands out there. Rhett Miller sounds as good as ever and the remaining members of the band sound on top of their game. Jeff D This is the latest of the Old 97's long list of albums and it ranks high on the list. Once again the band mixes it up with some 'Pop', 'Alt Country' and some hard edged rock songs.
Heck. So, pick this one up, and then go for some of the other ones such as Fight Songs, Wreck Your Life and Satellite Rides. Alive and Wired is also an excellent example of a group that is consistent in the studio as well as on the stage. I first heard the Old 97's over 10 years ago and they have been one of my favorite groups ever since. Get the whole collection. Well, they have an original creativity that is rare - their albums give you more than one good song per CD, you can safely enjoy all the tracks. Why. And, their albums can be listened to over and over again and never become tired of them.
They may be a cult sensation, but I think they are one of the best bands making music in the states. Thoughtful, smart lyrics, twisted, dark, fun, off beat time signatures, and lots of unexpected twists and turns on a very tired genre. Going to see the Old 97's in Sept during Austin City Limits and then will catch them in Buffalo in October. What I can't believe about the Old 97's is how long it took this dedicated, hard core, extremely critical music fan to find them. They should be much much bigger than they are and you will have a real treat moving through Blame It On Gravity to their full catalog, as I did. Outstanding. Not only is this album among the most well crafted popish, rock and roll records that I have heard in the past five years, the truly astonishing thing is that it is really no different than the quality of the music these folks have been putting out for nearly two decades. I have now listened to most of their music and it is hard for me to find a true misfire among the songs on any of their albums.
Dynamite show. Blame It On Gravity- I love this album, and I wanna tell ya. Great Music, Terrific Live Band. These boys play with a ton of fun-loving verve, and a whole lotta heart and soul. catch 'em live if you can. Saw the Old 97's live for the first time last night(8/1/08) at Webster Hall, NYC.
